Unstoppable Nike Bags Four Awards at GenNext

In 2018, the Sunday Times Generation Next Awards nominated Nike as the coolest top-performing brand in South Africa. In 2022, Nike has maintained its popularity with South Africa’s youth.

The global brand has claimed its ninth successive Overall coolest Brand Award while bagging the Coolest Clothing Brand and Coolest Footwear Brand awards at the 18th Sunday Times GenNext Awards last week. BMW got overall second position, while Adidas moved to third position from its seventh spot in 2021.

The Sunday Times GenNext survey is a barometer of what South Africa’s youth find trendy. The survey also delivers insights and information that are valued by brand management, marketers and advertisers. 

The head of sales at Arena Holdings, Eben Gewers said the survey is one of the best tools that provide significant information about their brands. 

“This year marks the 18th year of the GenNext survey, which provides marketers with the absolute best sights into youth’s perceptions of their brand. 18 is a significant birthday and one we intend to celebrate in style, especially since we are now able to host the in-person event again,” said Gewers.

“We are absolutely looking forward to this as well as the feedback from our various marketing partners on the insights delivered by the youth”.

Sunday Times GenNext Awards 2022

Nolitha Mkhwanazi, head of the youth strategy at Yellowwood, said the Sunday Times GenNext Youth Behaviour Report offers brands an upper hand on the shifting in the attitude of the South African youth.

“The 2022 GenNext Youth behaviour Report allows us to track the shifts in attitudes and needs satisfaction from 2021 giving a richer perspective into the hearts and minds of young people. The GenNext Youth behaviour report is a fact-based report that helps drive youth brand’s ambitious using data from over 5000 young people,” said Mkhwanazi.

The GenNext introduced new categories reflecting rapid innovation and consumer technology adoption this year. Trivago claimed the Coolest Online Accommodation Booking Sites, Capitec won the Coolest Savings and Investment Platform, while KFC won the Coolest Brand That Cares About The Community.

World cup-winner and Springbok Captain, Siya Kolisi was named the Coolest Local Sportsperson once again, while Metro FM won the Coolest Radio Station one again. The River triumphed as the Coolest Local TV Programme.
